イザヤ書４０：１８－２１

あなたがたは、神をだれになぞらえ、
神をどんな似姿に似せようとするのか。
To whom then will you liken God?
Or what likeness will youcompare to Him?
鋳物師は偶像を鋳て造り、
金細工人はそれに金をかぶせ、銀の鎖を作る。
The workman molds a graven image,
The goldsmith overspreads it with gold,
And the silversmith casts silver chains,
貧しい者は、奉納物として、朽ちない木を選び、
巧みな細人を捜して、動かない偶像を据える。
Whoever is too impoverished for such a contribution
Chooses a tree that will not rot;
He seeks for himself a skillful workman
To prepare a carved image that will not totter.
あなたがたは知らないのか。聞かないのか。
初めから、告げられなかったのか。
Have you not known? Have you not heard?
Has it not been told you from the beginning?
地の基がどうして置かれたかを悟らなかったのか。
Have you not understood from the foundations of the earth?
